It has a rich and interesting history that started with the Shoshone Indians (or Gabrielino Indians, as they were called by the Spaniards), who were the first inhabitants. Two priests led parties of soldiers through this land in 1771, when it already had 4,000 Gabrielino Indian residents. The city’s varied history includes changing of the city’s boundaries and being part of other cities.
